Planned Unparenthood

The recent shenanigans involving Planned Parenthood and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has got me thinking.

As someone who believes that abortion is morally wrong, I applauded the first decision of Komen to cease funding Planned Parenthood. Not because the funds were used for abortions (they were not), but because any support of Planned Parenthood helps that organization (which does many other good things) to engage in the abortion business. But the reversal (apparently) of Komen’s decision coupled with the fact that the reason they made the original decision involved a technicality about funding groups “under investigation” makes the whole matter a farce.

But abortion is not a farce; it is an American tragedy.

My question to those who are pro-abortion (ok, I know the PC way to express it: “abortion rights” or “pro-choice” but, come on! You call us “anti-choice”, so I get to call you “pro-abortion”!) is: If Planned Parenthood could raise $3 million in the wake of the original Komen decision (Komen’s funding amounted to less than $1 million), why aren’t these people sending Planned Parenthood the money in the first place? They have that right, and the freedom to exercise that right. Komen (let’s pretend they made the original decision based on moral grounds related to abortion, ok?) has the right, as a private foundation, to fund or not fund anyone they choose. If you think Planned Parenthood is worthy of support, SUPPORT THEM! Don’t insist that everyone else do so as well! It is, after all, about freedom of choice!

And since I support your right to support Planned Parenthood, all I ask is that you support my right (and any private foundation’s right) to not support Planned Parenthood.

Put your money where your mouth is, and try not to choke.

Glen – I don’t agree, as you realize, but I really appreciate your thoughtful questions.
